One Heartache at a Time

A long freight train pulled into Tucson

I heard the engine long before the whistle cried

It was three a.m. and I was thinking how I missed you

Thinking about how poorly I had lied

I Said "Honey, I’m out here having the time of my life."

No care or concern for who might have been my wife

I know I’ve had the freedom

To choose the punishment for my crime

I’m learning the hard way,

One heartache at a time

I know this old hotel has seen some good times too

I wouldn’t ask them to turn the jukebox down just because I’m feeling blue

The rhythm of that freight train sounds like music to me

My heart and that old whistle blowing perfect harmony

Next thing i know I’m running cross those tracks

No care or concern is ever gonna bring her back

I know I’ve had the freedom to choose the punishment for my crime

I’m learning the hard way,

One heartache at a time

Every time I jump from a moving train I swear it’s the last time, never again

I prefer to walk alone, that last mile into town

Let my engines cool, let my wheels slow down.

Well...there is more than one true love

More than one garden of eden

But to prove it more than twice becomes a little bit deceiving

So, the next time you’re riding on that short and narrow line

Don’t do things the hard way,

One heartache at a time.
